Pre-Purchase Condition and Value Survey

A Pre-Purchase Survey is the most comprehensive type of marine survey and is recommended whenever a buyer is considering the purchase of a vessel. The purpose of the survey is to provide a clear understanding of the vessel’s overall condition, safety, and value so buyers can make informed purchasing decisions before closing on the transaction.

During the inspection, major structural, mechanical, electrical, and safety systems are evaluated to identify deficiencies, damage, wear, improper repairs, or maintenance concerns. Depending on the vessel and survey scope, the inspection may include moisture testing, percussion sounding, operational testing of onboard systems, and a sea trial when applicable.

As a Professional Engineer experienced in structural and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) systems, I provide clients with a detailed technical evaluation that goes beyond a basic visual inspection. Particular attention is given to vessel structure, electrical safety, corrosion, fuel systems, and other critical components that can significantly impact vessel safety, reliability, and long-term ownership costs.

Pre-purchase surveys are commonly performed for center consoles, sport fishing boats, yachts, sailboats, trawlers, pontoon boats, and commercial vessels. Surveys are available for recreational and commercial vessels located at marinas, boatyards, dealerships, private docks, and storage facilities.

A detailed written report is provided following the inspection and typically includes photographs, documented findings, recommendations for repairs or further evaluation, and condition and valuation information commonly required by buyers, lenders, and insurance companies.
