A Pre-Purchase Condition and Value Marine Survey helps identify the true condition and fair market value of a vessel before you commit to buying it. While a boat may appear well-maintained at first glance, hidden structural, mechanical, electrical, or safety issues can lead to unexpected repairs and significant expense after purchase.

A comprehensive survey provides buyers with an objective assessment of the vessel’s overall condition and estimated value, helping them make informed decisions, negotiate repairs or pricing, satisfy lender or insurance requirements, and avoid costly surprises down the road.

We offer Pre-Purchase, Insurance, Vessel Acceptance, Marine Appraisal and Damage surveys.  Captain Scott is also a USCG licensed OUPV and can be hired for vessel deliveries, yacht management and concierge services to ensure your vessel is ready when you are!

Many insurance companies and lenders require a marine survey before issuing coverage or approving financing, particularly for older vessels or higher-value boats. A marine survey provides an independent assessment of the vessel's condition, identifies safety concerns, and helps establish an estimated fair market value. Requirements vary by insurer and lender, so it is advisable to verify their specific requirements before scheduling a survey. 

 During a Pre-Purchase Survey, we inspect the vessel’s hull for structural concerns and evaluate all major onboard systems, including fuel, steering, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical components. We also document the condition and presence of safety equipment that will transfer with the vessel as part of the sale.

The goal of the survey is to provide buyers with a clear understanding of the vessel’s overall condition so they can make an informed purchasing decision and avoid unexpected repairs or deficiencies after closing.

 Marine surveys generally reference applicable United States Coast Guard regulations, accepted marine industry practices, and relevant standards published by organizations such as ABYC and NFPA where applicable.  

A sea trial is an operational evaluation of the vessel performed on the water as part of many pre-purchase surveys. During the sea trial, the vessel’s engines, steering, controls, navigation equipment, and onboard systems are observed under normal operating conditions. Performance characteristics such as acceleration, engine temperatures, vibration, handling, and overall operation may also be evaluated. Sea trials can help identify issues that may not be apparent while the vessel is docked or hauled out. 

Marine survey pricing is typically based on the length of the vessel and the complexity of its onboard systems. At SS Marine Surveying LLC, Pre-Purchase Surveys generally range from $20–$25 per foot depending on the vessel size, type, and installed equipment.

Reduced rates may be available for Insurance and Appraisal Surveys.

A minimum survey fee of $550 applies to all inspections.

Oil analysis services are available upon request and are billed separately at $60 per sample when performed in conjunction with a survey.

For inspections outside of our normal service area, travel mileage is billed at the current IRS standard mileage rate, presently $0.725 per mile.

When selecting a marine surveyor, look for professional credentials, industry experience, continuing education, and membership in recognized organizations such as Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors. Practical boating experience and technical expertise are also important factors when evaluating a surveyor.

Yes. Many older vessels remain excellent candidates for purchase and ownership. The purpose of the survey is to objectively document the vessel's condition, identify deficiencies, and provide information that helps buyers and owners make informed decisions. 

Clients are welcome and encouraged to attend the inspection whenever possible. Being present during the survey provides an opportunity to better understand the vessel’s condition, maintenance needs, onboard systems, and any findings identified during the inspection process. Many clients find it valuable to ask questions and observe system operation firsthand during the survey and sea trial.  Not local?  Video conferencing can be used to view the vessel during the inspection.

While a haul-out is not required for every survey, it is strongly recommended for pre-purchase condition and value surveys. Hauling the vessel allows inspection of the hull bottom, running gear, propellers, shafts, rudders, thru-hull fittings, and other underwater components that cannot be fully evaluated while the vessel remains in the water. A haul-out provides a more complete assessment of the vessel's condition and may reveal deficiencies that would otherwise remain hidden.

Marine Surveys can be requested 7 days a week.  However, please check with the marina or service yard where the vessel is located for any restrictions.

 Our normal service area is throughout Central Florida and the East Coast, including Orlando, Daytona Beach, Port Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, Merritt Island, Melbourne, Vero Beach, Fort Pierce, Stuart, and surrounding marinas and waterways.

A marine survey includes a visual inspection of accessible mechanical and electrical systems and observations made during operation. However, a marine survey is not a substitute for a detailed engine diagnostic inspection performed by a qualified marine mechanic. Engine oil analysis, compression testing, and computer diagnostics may be recommended when appropriate 

No. A marine survey is not a pass/fail inspection. The surveyor documents the vessel's observed condition, identifies deficiencies, and provides recommendations. The decision to purchase, insure, finance, or repair the vessel rests with the client and other involved parties. 

Nearly every vessel has findings, especially used boats. Survey findings help buyers, owners, insurers, and lenders understand the vessel's condition and prioritize repairs, maintenance, or safety improvements. Findings do not necessarily mean the vessel should not be purchased. 

 Yes. Survey findings often identify deferred maintenance, safety concerns, damaged components, or future repair costs that may be used during purchase negotiations. A survey can provide buyers with objective information before finalizing a transaction.

The inspection and sea trial portion of most surveys is completed in one day.  The published report is typically available within 48 hours.

Survey reports are typically delivered within a few business days following the inspection. Report turnaround may vary depending on vessel size, complexity, and the number of findings requiring documentation. A thorough report takes time to ensure accuracy and completeness
